Master Plan to Architectural Design Studio

Date /

2017-2019

Location

Lod, Israel

A disused area within a dense urban environment is transformed into an exciting public space.
HQ Architects’ 186,000 m² Hess Goldberg Masterplan expresses a strong focus on enhancing connectivity, infrastructure and providing quality public space. A strong public realm is expressed by transforming a disused space next to the train tracks into a public green space, with the creation of an underground multi-level passageway, and by introducing a new bridge over the tracks, both promoting cross connection to the city. The Masterplan opens marginalised and disused spaces, provides additional housing and vibrant walkable public areas, setting the foundations for Lod’s future growth and its transformation into a destination.

Redefining a neglected industrial zone by transforming it into a new pulsating heart of the city

HQ Architects’ 360,000 m² Hess Goldberg Masterplan creates a new centrality in the city by stitching together the urban fabric, unifying the scattered open and disused public spaces and providing urban flexibility for the area’s future development. A number of rigid rules must be preserved, such as the continuation of the urban grid, its connection to a park along the railroad track and determining the uses of the foundation floors according to the nature of the surrounding streets.

The Masterplan optimizes the urban space of this marginalized area, by creating green public spaces, and a clear distinction between public and private areas as well as increasing the housing units. It invigorates the old industrial area’s business activity by adding 79,200 m² of office and commercial space, breathing new life to it.
